“Through this project, I hope for the viewers to have a deeper understanding of the people of Myanmar/Burma. I hope viewers will be curious about what they are seeing and use it as a tool to learn more about their neighbors from once formally known as the Golden Land.”

A Southdale Heritage Public

Art Project

The Traffic Signal Box at Edgewood Avenue and East Street was designed and painted by Yan Yan over the course of 105 hours, and is referred to as “Our Enlightenment”, a piece that celebrates Burmese Culture. Each side tells a story of tradition, community, and heritage.

On the East Side of the box, the pieces displayed are: Paih Wrestlers, Matu Dancer, Chheih Lam Dance, and Shwedagon Pagoda.

On the South Side of the box, the pieces displayed are: Saung-Gauk, Kachin Duo, and Padauk Flower.

On the North Side of the box, the pieces displayed are: Yoke Thé, Shan Drummer, Hakha Man, and The Great Hornbill. 

On the West Side of the box, the pieces displayed are: Taung Za Lat, Hakha Woman, Karen Buffalo Horn, Father and Son Frying Samosas, and Chinlone Player. 

All the sides are unified by a woven Rattan background, honoring cultural tradition and artistry. For information regarding each specific piece, check out the buttons to the right.
